Hailing the Death Cab for COBOL
The rumors of the death of the mainframe are certainly wrong, as they have been in the past. But what about COBOL? Y2K didn't kill it, but imminent retirement of the last COBOL programmers may. Even with universities beginning to teach it again, the number of students interested in learning it is small. Intersting article, though you may not care for the blogger's idea of a solution - migrating off the mainframe.

The death of COBOL has been rumored for as long as I have been in IT, but business keep writing new programs to process their data. With 95% of COBOL use in the batch world I’d be willing to bet my paycheck that it will still be here at the end of the century.
